The Maryland State Fire Marshal's office is investigating a building fire at the old Henryton State Hospital complex near Sykesville, Thursday evening, April 27.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire through the roof of a large four-story building on the campus of the abandoned hospital. Firefighters from Carroll, Frederick, Howard, and Baltimore Counties were called to the scene to assist.

The Sykesville Fire Department has responded to a number of fires at the complex over the past several years, including a fire in December, 2007 that destroyed another old building at the facility.

The hospital has been shut down by the state and there is no electric or utilities to the facility. It continues to be a problem for firefighter safety when we are called to the scene. In recent years the facility has been a hot spot for malicious teenagers and ghost hunters.

As you can read from the 2007 article, little has changed at the hospital center; despite calls by the fire department and others to have the site razed or secured. The department continues to urgently call on state officials to address the situation in the name of safety for all.
