Job Description

Title: Paramedic/Fire Fighter
Status: Full-Time or Part-Time

JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Shift Leader, who reports to the Employee Committee; provides basic and advanced life support care; performs fire suppression and prevention duties to protect life and property; provides emergency rescue; utilizes various tools and power equipment in rescue operations, and maintains departmental equipment, vehicles and facility;

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provides ALS functions, drives medic unit or rides as a firefighter.
Provides emergency medical treatment to injured, sick or convalescent persons using modern emergency medical equipment and techniques.
Administers Basic Life Support; provides Advanced Life Support at medical emergencies; applies techniques for the control of bleeding, utilize immobilization techniques to stabilize patients; performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other advanced life support procedures.
Provides emergency medical services as required by the Maryland Medical Protocols for ALS providers.
Responds to fire alarms, lays and connects hose; hold nozzle and direct water streams; raise and climb ladders; assists with ventilation, entry; assists with rescue, freeing victims from situations in which they are physically trapped; utilize and maintain self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
Operates all types of firefighting and rescue such as portable fire extinguishers, power tools, hand tools, and related equipment such as fans, forcible entry tools, pike poles and axes.
Participates in tours, fire prevention and other public interactions.
Prepares and maintains a variety of logs, reports and related documents.
Attends training sessions that include firefighting techniques, emergency medical care, and the proper use of related tools and equipment
Performs various duties in the maintenance of station facilities and equipment. Cleans fire department tools, apparatus and facilities.
Functions as a team member in all fire, rescue and emergency medical calls for service.
Operates and maintains a variety of fire department vehicles to include, ambulances, utility truck and other vehicles within the class of your driver’s; license in all weather and conditions.

OTHER DUTIES
Preforms other related duties as required or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and OTHER ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE OF
Emergency Medical Services
Principles, practices and procedures of modern firefighting.
Ambulances, fire apparatus, equipment, tools, devices, facilities and the proper use and maintenance.
Principles and practices of emergency medical care such as basic life support, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and other advanced life support techniques to include but not limited to:
Intravenous fluid administration
Proper medication dosing and administration
EKG monitoring and defibrillation/cardioversion
External jugular cannulation
Intraosseous cannulation
External transcutaneous pacing
Endotracheal intubation
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
Needle chest decompression
Motor Vehicle Administration laws as they apply to emergency vehicles.

SKILLS IN
Selecting and applying appropriate emergency treatment and using specialized equipment and apparatus.
Analyzing fire and emergency situations and providing an effective course of action
Effectively dealing with people under stress, the influence of drugs and alcohol, mental health issues and the elderly.
Demonstrates professional courtesy and behavior at all times.
The Operation of emergency apparatus and equipment.
Maneuvering apparatus at emergency scenes.
Performing minor repairs and preventive maintenance of equipment.

ABILITY TO
Work in a stressful environment while maintaining composure.
Write clearly and informatively, edits work for spelling and grammar, varies writing style to meet needs, and able to read and interpret written information.
Access a computer for variety of departmental needs, reporting, scheduling, and other associated tasks.

Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or GED
Minimum Valid Class “C” Driver’s License with no more than 3 points
Current License of Maryland Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT-P)
Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMTP)
Completion of Carroll County Advanced Life Support Provider Skills and Mega Code Test
Approved Carroll County Advanced Life Support Provider
NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800
Firefighter I or equivalent
Hazardous Materials Operations
Completion of Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC) (within 18 months of employment)
Rescue Technician Site Ops and Machinery (within 18 months of employment)
Truck Company Operations or equivalent (within 18 months of employment)
Completes other required certifications as mandated by the Employee Committee, The Chief or the President.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT/DEMANDS
Frequent need to stand, walk, sit, talk, or hear, use of hands to finger, handle or feel ad perform other similar actions during the course of a work day.
Risk of Exposure to blood borne pathogens, chemicals, mechanical parts and other hazards.
Exposure to Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) environment’s.
Perform duties while wearing protective gear, helmets, gloves, hoods and breathing apparatus.
Annual Carroll County Volunteer Emergency Service Association (CCVESA) physical and you must satisfactorily pass the medical requirements.
Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 125 pounds.
Work in a drug/alcohol free environment with the use of mandatory and pre-employment drug testing.
SFDFD 5th to 4th Packet (within 12 months)
SFDFD Annual Compliance Training and Blood Borne Pathogen training
Physical requirement to necessitate that facial hair is maintained to properly wear SCBA full and half-face piece air purifying respirators and other job-specific safety equipment and pass SCBA fit test throughout employment.

UNUSUAL DEMANDS
Assigned to work on wither a rotating shift or fixed shift basis, which will include nights, evenings, and/or holidays.
Subject to call to duty in emergencies, and maybe required to work overtime with little or no notice.
Subject to mandatory call backs.
