An unidentified woman was found dead inside a burning apartment in Eldersburg Monday morning.

At approximately 9:30AM, Sykesville units responded for a report of an odor of smoke in a townhome in the 900 block of Marinch Court. Upon arrival, Engine 123's officer upgraded the call to a building fire.

Fire crews quickly discovered that visibility was near zero as thick smoke filled the second floor. A working fire dispatch was requested with additional units responding from Winfield, Gamber, Howard County and Baltimore County.

Sykesville and West Friendship crews found the fire contained within a second-floor bedroom, and aggressively attacked the fire to prevent its spread. Search crews found one of the home's occupants deceased on the floor of the bedroom.

The fire was contained to the second-floor bedroom area with extensive smoke damage to the rest of the townhouse as well as an adjacent unit. The death of the victim is the first fire fatality in Sykesville's area in more than three years.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal is investigating the incident.
