The Eldersburg Wal Mart store was evacuated for a brief time, Tuesday June 19, when several employees complained of a burning sensation in their eyes, throats and skin.
Sykesville firefighters were dispatched to the store on Liberty Road at approximately 3:30pm, along with units from Gamber, Winfield, Baltimore County and the Carroll County Hazardous Materials Team. Baltimore County's Haz Mat team was also special-requested to the scene. Arriving firefighters made a quick check of the store and noticed the same burning sensation the employees reported. The store was evacuated and secured for the arrival of the haz mat team.
Haz Mat crews entered the store, but the odor had dissipated, and air quality readings were in the normal range. The all-clear was given at approximately 6:45, and the store was reopened.
Seven store employees were evaluated by EMS crews, but refused treatment or transport to the hospital. No one else was injured.
Our thanks to all of the mutual aid companies who responded, and for the patience and cooperation of the Wal Mart management, employees and customers during the incident.
