This morning at 9:15 am Sykesville firefighters were dispatched to a reported vehicle accident in the 2100blk of Liberty Rd. Chief 12-1 arrived on the scene moments later and found a car on fire in the westbound lane of Liberty Rd.

The vehicle had ran into the back of an SUV and subsequently caught fire. The operator of the SUV was able to move his vehicle away from the car on fire. There was one minor injury to a female driver but refused services.

Auto fires are fairly uncommon when involved in vehicle accidents. Majority of the time, if there is a fire, it is secondary to damage of the motor and flammable liquids leaking onto the hot engine. While all vehicles "could" have a fire secondary to an accident, manufacturers take numerous safety measures to prevent this from happening.

Firefighters were on location for less than 30 minutes. MSP are investigating.
