Sykesville fire and EMS crews responded to a serious accident, Sunday, October 2, near the intersection of Liberty Road (Route 26) and Monroe Avenue.

Lieutenant Robbie Ruch arrived on scene with the crew from Squad 12 to find a westbound motorcycle had collided with an oncoming minivan that was attempting a left turn into a parking lot.

The force of the collision sent the operator of the motorcycle, aged approximately in his 30's, and his eight year old son, who was a passenger, flying over the top of the minivan. They were found lying in the roadway. Lt. Ruch says both had suffered serious injuries.

A further check revealed a total of two adults and four children in the minivan. Lt. Ruch ordered a door popped from the van to better gain access to the patients. He also requested additional EMS units from the surrounding area.

The motorcyclist and his son were assessed, packaged for transport, and flown to area trauma centers. The father was flown by Maryland State Police Trooper One to Shock Trauma; while the son was flown by the U.S. Park Police's Eagle One to the children's trauma center at Johns Hopkins.

Two of the children in the minivan were transported by Baltimore County Medic 18 to Johns Hopkins. The remaining four people in the van either declined treatment or were not injured.

At last report, the operator of the motorcycle was listed in critical condition at Shock Trauma. His son's condition was unavailable. Maryland State Police are investigating the accident.
