An elderly woman was killed in a house fire Sunday morning in the 2800 block of Flag Marsh Road, which is located between Woodbine and Mount Airy, according to a Mount Airy volunteer fire company spokesman.

The name of the victim was not released immediately by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office, which will not release the woman's name until positive identification is made by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Deputy State Fire Marshal Caryn McMahon said.

The Mount Airy fire company received a call about the fire around 8:14 a.m. and the first unit arrived on scene at 8:22 a.m. Roughly 100 personnel from 32 units fought the blaze, which was under control around 9 a.m., Doug Alexander, public information officer for the Mount Airy fire company said.

The two-story, wood-framed home was occupied by an elderly couple, the fire marshal's office said in the news release. One occupant of the home escaped prior to firefighters arriving and sustained no injuries, Alexander said.
The home was located in a wooded area down a long, unpaved and narrow driveway and sustained heavy damage, estimated at around $200,000 by fire marshal's office.

The fire marshal's office concluded the fire started in the living room of the home, but no cause had been determined as of yet. The Carroll County Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Police are assisting in the investigation.
Alexander said a firefighter sustained a minor leg burn while fighting the fire and was released from the Carroll Hospital Center Sunday morning.
