Carroll County Emergency Operations Center received a call reporting that there was visible fire at the rear of a house in the 6900 block of Zinnia Drive in Sykesville, Maryland shortly before 10:00 am on Tuesday, September 16th, 2014. Emergency apparatus from Sykesville, Winfield, Gamber and Howard County West Friendship and Glenwood fire departments were dispatched and quickly responded.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Department was first to arrive at the scene and confirmed that there was a working house fire. The Maryland State Fire Marshall (FM36) arrived and reported the fire was reaching the attic and roof area from the rear deck area. The Carroll County Sheriff’s deputy used his fire extinguisher to help suppress the fire, the deputy then used a nearby garden hose to keep the fire from spreading. The deputy’s quick thinking and actions helped prevent further spreading of the fire.

Engine 141 from the Winfield Fire Department arrived and was quickly backed up by Tower 12, Engine 123 and Engine 124 from the Sykesville Fire Department. The remaining fire was extinguished and fire crews overhauled the rear of the house. Fire damage was contained to the deck and to the rear of the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation from the Maryland State Fire Marshall’s office.
