Sykesville firefighters were among hundreds who turned out on Wednesday, April 20 to honor the life and service of Prince Georges County Firefighter-Paramedic John "Skillet" Ulmschneider.

Ulmschneider was killed on April 15 when he and other firefighters responded to a medical "welfare check" at a home on Temple Hills. Ulmschneider and Firefighter Kevin Swain were shot by the homeowner as they made entry into the house. Ulmschneider died at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital. Swain continues to recover at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.

It is a time honored tradition in the fire service that firefighters everywhere honor the loss of a brother or sister in the line of duty. So it was on Wednesday. The SFDFD was privileged to attend.
