Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department volunteers, along with Carroll County Department of Fire and EMS (CCDFEMS) career personnel and mutual aid units from Carroll, Baltimore and Howard counties responded to a house fire in the 5400 block of Mineral Hill Road in Eldersburg Wednesday evening, August 23.
The fire was reported at approximately 9:05 p.m. The two occupants of the home told firefighters they were watching TV when their doorbell camera sent them an alert. When they went to investigate, they found fire on the rear porch of the home. They were able to get out of the house safely and called 911.
As crews arrived on the scene, Chief 12 (Ruch, Jr.) advised dispatch and responding units that the house was well involved in fire and that crews should attack the fire defensively, that is, from the exterior.
Approximately 20 Sykesville volunteers worked alongside CCDFEMS personnel and mutual aid crews for 45 minutes to bring the fire under control. One firefighter was transported to Carroll Hospital Center for treatment of a minor injury.
The occupants of the home are being assisted by the Red Cross and family members. The Maryland State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire.
