A member of the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department was shot and wounded while on duty in Prince Georges County, Friday afternoon, April 15.

Kevin Swain, who is a live-in member at the Morningside Fire Department, had responded with his crew to check the welfare of a subject at a home in Temple Hills around 7:30PM. Swain and Paramedic John Ulmschneider made entry to the home when they were shot. A civilian was also wounded.

Kevin was flown by Maryland State Police Aviation to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, where he was undergoing surgery for several gunshot wounds. Paramedic Ulmschneider was taken to Medstar Southern Maryland Hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to Prince Georges County Police.

Kevin and his family are from Sykesville. Upon word of the incident, Chief Ed Ruch Jr, along with deputy chiefs Joe Dennis and Bruce Fleming and EMS Assistant Chief Jeff Fleming, drove to Shock Trauma where they stood by brothers and sisters from Prince Georges County and Baltimore City as Kevin was taken into surgery.

Any questions regarding the incident should be directed to the Prince Georges County Police Department. The Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department would like to send our condolences to Paramedic John Ulmschneider's family, friends and colleagues. We would also like to thank both PGFD and PGPD for their professionalism and brotherhood in this most difficult hour.
