By Firefighter/EMT Bill Flanagan
February 4, 2020

The Sykesville Fire Department in southern Carroll County was alerted at 10:08 this morning for a report of a house fire in the 1700 block of Carpenters Drive in Marriottsville, Maryland. The initial reports was for a fire on the stove with the house filled with smoke. Gamber, Winfield, West Friendship responded with Sykesville on this call. The report of the house fire escalated to a house fire with rescue as a neighbor went inside the smoke filled house, but did not come back out. Stations from Reese, Lisbon, Glenwood, Ellicott City, and Bethany were dispatched to assist with the fire and rescue efforts.

West Friendship engine 31 and Sykesville engine 123 were the first to arrive and reported that light smoke was showing from the rear of the single family, ranch style house. Crews from West Friendship and Sykesville entered to residence to find the stove was on fire with possible extension into the cabinets and walls. West Friendship's crew extinguished the fire while Sykesville's crew searched the home for the neighbor who entered the house.

Engines from Gamber and Winfield arrived to help with the operations and water supply. The fire was quickly extinguished and the both the neighbor, who entered the house, and the home owner were located in the backyard of the residence. Both reported no injuries. Extensive overhaul was performed to ensure the fire did not spread and the house was ventilated to remove the black smoke from the stove fire. The kitchen stove was removed from the house

The home owner reported that they were using a toaster oven on top of the stove. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage from the fire was localized to the kitchen around the stove and oven area, while smoke damage was throughout the house. The house did have working smoke alarms which alerted the home owner of the fire. The home owner quickly left the house and called 911 to report the fire. The neighbor who entered the smoke filled home was fortunate in that no injuries were incurred when they entered the home or were attempting to put the fire out.
