Junior Firefighter Program

The Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department's Junior Program is among the oldest and most active programs in Carroll County.

Open to young people ages 12–16 who are interested in learning about firefighting and emergency medical services, Sykesville's junior program promotes a healthy, social and educational atmosphere. We meet on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at the station.

Juniors participate in various activities such as: maneuvering through mazes in turnout gear and training with the latest equipment and techniques used by senior firefighters on the fireground.

Juniors participate at the annual Carroll County Junior Day, a friendly competition between juniors from around the county. Competition events include donning turnout gear and boarding a fire engine, extending hose lines, a bucket brigade and a battle of the bucket. Juniors also get to learn about specialized teams from around the county such as the Advanced Technical Rescue Team and the Hazmat team.

Juniors also have the opportunity to take field trips to other departments and fire department-related events, where they are able to learn more about the fire service.
