Sykesville Units Battle First Working House Fire Of 2023
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Public Information Officer Bill Rehkopf
January 3, 2023

At approximately 8:20PM on Monday, January 2, the Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department was alerted, along with mutual aid units, for the reported house fire in the 6100 block of Frontier Road in the Oklahoma Estates neighborhood of Eldersburg.

Within minutes, Deputy Chief 12 (Polikoff) arrived on scene and confirmed a fire in the garage involving several vehicles and threatening the rest of the house. He requested the rapid intervention dispatch, resulting in the dispatch of additional units.

Approximately 25 volunteers and 5 paid crew members from Sykesville "dumped the house," responding with all of the department's apparatus to the scene. Working together with our mutual aid partners, the fire was contained to the garage and attic of the home, with two vehicles in the driveway and a trailered cabin cruiser next to the garage also severely damaged. Thanks to the efforts of the crews, the fire did not spread to the remainder of the home.

There were four people at home at the time of the fire. Three of them suffered injuries, which resulted in one being transported to Carroll Hospital Center with non-life threatening injuries. The other two patients refused transport.

In all, some 50 firefighters from Sykesville, Gamber and Winfield in Carroll County were on scene, as well as crews from Baltimore and Howard counties. The Maryland State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire.

Your Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department depends on the efforts of volunteers to help protect the community and respond to incidents such as this. We are always seeking new members to assist us in our mission of community service.
