An Eldersburg home suffered moderate damage in an early morning kitchen fire, Friday, May 19.

The alarm was struck at approximately 2:00 am at the home at 2611 Arthur Avenue. Sykesville fire crews were dispatched, along with units from Gamber, Liberty Road and Randallstown.

Sykesville's Ladder 12 arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the front and side of the single story ranch-style house. Sergeant Steve "Scuba" Pickett established the incident command.

The owner of the home had kept most of the fire in check with a garden hose. The crew from Ladder 12 stretched a 1 3/4 inch hoseline into the building and extinguished the remainder of the fire. Squad 12's crew conducted a primary search of the building to ensure that no one was still inside.

The remainder of the crews on the scene worked together to overhaul the kitchen and check for any hidden fire extension. Firefighters also worked to salvage what they could from the kitchen.

While the homeowner was able to control some of the fire with a garden hose; the members of Sykesville Fire Department would like to remind members of the community that attempting to extinguish a large fire without protective equipment is extremely dangerous, and should be left to fire department personnel, who have the training and equipment to safely extinguish fires.

Units: Sykesville Ladder 12, Squad 12, Engine 123, Paramedic 128, Duty 12

Mutual Aid: Gamber Engines 131, 134; Randallstown Engine 18
