Construction crews digging a trench at Carrolltowne Elementary School ruptured a two inch gas line, Monday, June 19.

The crew was using a backhoe near the kindergarten addition for the school around 3:30 PM, when they accidentally cut through the line, sending gas into the school and the adjacent neighborhood.

Sykesville fire crews arrived and immediately ensured the building was evacuated. About a dozen school employees and others left the building without incident.

With assistance from Gamber's engine crew, hose lines were pulled as a precaution; and positive pressure fans were used to keep the gas fumes from spreading throughout the school. Engine crews from Liberty Road and Randallstown in Baltimore County stood by with their vehicles as a precaution.

BGE crews arrived within the hour and secured the gas line. After fire and utility crews monitored gas levels in the building, the situation was declared under control. There were no injuries.

Sykesville fire officials would like to thank the staff of Carrolltowne Elementary for their professional cooperation during the incident; and our neighboring fire departments for their assistance.
