Four people were seriously injured in a crash in front of Station 12, Saturday evening, September 2.

Crews at the station heard a loud bang, with Paramedic Mark Punt the first to see the crash. Crews scrambled for their gear and apparatus and Paramedic Punt called the crash in to Carroll County dispatch.

Two vehicles were involved. Crews found a man and woman trapped inside an overturned SUV, with an 11 year old boy laying on the ground outside the vehicle. The other car had a fire in the engine compartment with gasoline leaking. The driver had been pulled to safety by bystanders.

While fire crews immediately put out the car fire, other members began extrication and treatment of the victims. In addition to Sykesville's two medic units, two additional units were requested from Gamber and Winfield to the scene; as well as two Maryland State Police Helicopters.

All three members of the family in the SUV were packaged for transport, as was the driver of the other car. The mother and son in the SUV were flown to Johns Hopkins, while the father and the driver of the other vehicle were flown to Shock Trauma; all within the "golden hour" of treatment.

Sykesville EMT Joe Kipe flew to Shock Trauma in Trooper 8 to provide assistance to the flight crew.

Maryland State Police investigated the accident.
