One man was killed in a crash on Liberty Road near Oakland Mills Road, Friday morning April 20.

Sykesville fire and EMS crews received the call for the crash at 7:32 am. Paramedic 128 and Rescue Squad 12 were clearing from a carbon monoxide emergency call and responded from the street.

As they arrived on the scene, crews found three vehicles involved in the crash, with the driver of a small pickup truck unconscious and trapped in his vehicle. Lt. Marc Maczis and his crew on the rescue squad stabilized the vehicle and began to remove the driver's side door to gain access to the patient. Lt. Maczis requested two more paramedic units and a helicopter to the scene. Engine 131 from Gamber and Baltimore County Paramedic 465 and Special Unit 468 responded. Sykesville Ambulance 129 also responded to the scene. Deputy Chief Ed Ruch, Jr. arrived and assumed command of the incident.

It took crews about 15 minutes to extricate the driver of the pickup truck. EMS crews worked to stabilize the patient and transported him to a nearby field where the Maryland State Police helicopter was waiting. Trooper 8 transported the patient to Shock Trauma, where he succumbed to his injuries. Sykesville EMS personnel Tony Ottomano and Chris Shike flew with the patient to assist the MSP flight medic.

The drivers of the other two vehicles involved in the crash were not injured.
