A paramedic was killed and a pregnant woman lost her child in a head-on crash on Interstate 70 in Howard County, Thursday, November 18.

Maryland State Police say the driver of the Mid-Maryland Medical Transport ambulance, Jeannette M. Roseberry, 27, of Boonsboro, was eastbound on the highway, transporting the pregnant woman to the hospital when the ambulance crossed the median, striking a westbound tractor trailer loaded with lumber. A box truck then struck the tractor trailer.

Sykesville's Squad 12 was called to the scene as an additional rescue. Upon their arrival, the squad's crew was instructed to prepare to disentangle Roseberry from the wreckage of the ambulance. After consultation, it was decided that the MSP would conduct their investigation before the victim was removed, and Squad 12 was placed in service.

Paramedic Roseberry was pronounced dead on the scene. Three others inside the ambulance were injured. Police identified the injured as patient Maria M. Williams, 22, of Hagerstown; ambulance attendant John H. Bagley Jr., 34, of Hagerstown; and nurse Robin A. Banfe, 31, of Smithsburg. All three were transported to local hospitals, where Williams later lost her unborn child after an emergency caeserian section.

The members of the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department send our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family and friends of Jeannette Roseberry on their loss; and our best wishes and thoughts to those who are recovering from the crash.
