On Saturday September 20, 2008 at 09:29pm; Sykesville Fire Crews were alerted for an investigation at the McDonalds on Liberty Road in Eldersburg. Engine 124. Ladder 12 and Ambulance 128 quickly responded. While responding, units were advised by Carroll County Emergency Communications that there was a reported chemical odor with sick people. The assignment was upgraded to a Hazardous Materials Response adding Rescue Squad 12, Engine 134(Gamber) and the Carroll County Hazardous Materials Team to the call.

First arriving Ladder 12 reported the building was evacuated and the crew began to investigate while Engine 124 staged and secured a water supply on Oklahoma Road. Engine 124's officer (Lt. Pickett) established Command as the Ambulance and Rescue Squad arrived to assist. The crews from Ladder and Rescue Squad 12 investigated the building to find a chemical leak in the male bathroom that was contained while the Ambulance evaluated one patient who refused medical services. Hazardous Materials crews arrived, evaluated the chemical and determined it to be a liquid acid, commonly referred to as a "soda bomb". The hazard was removed from the building and the building was made safe for re-occupancy. The incident was turned over to The Maryland State Police and The Maryland Fire Marshalls Office for investigation.

Sykesville crews and the Hazardous Materials Team operated for two hours.
