On September 23, 2008 at 1:42 pm, Medic 129 was alerted for an injured person who had been thrown from a horse on Marriottsville Road in the area of The McKeldin State Park. Shortly after the initial dispatch Sykesville fire crews were alerted to assist on the call.

Medic 129 arrived and was escorted on foot into a heavily wooded area to the patient's location by a horseback rider. As the medic crew was making their way through the woods, Duty 12 (Captain Dyson) arrived and established Command. Because of the terrain and poor radio reception in the area, Command's only means of communication with the medic crew was via cellular telephone. Rescue Squad 12 and ATV 12 responded to assist based on the nature of the incident.

The additional crews made access to the patient via Sykesville's All-Terrain Rescue Vehicle (ATV 12) and packaged him for transport out of the woods. The patient was extricated from the woods by ATV 12 and turned over to additional awaiting EMS units. Trooper 8 transported the patient to Shock Trauma. It took approx. 55 minutes to access and extricate the patient from the wooded area. This would have been much longer if not for the response and use of ATV 12.

*We would like to thank all of those involved with and responsible for the addition of ATV 12 to our fleet of apparatus. This incident again proves what a valuable service this vehicle is providing to those we serve.
