The Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department was requested to respond to a building fire at Carrolltowne Mall on Friday evening, December 3.

Dispatchers informed responding units that there were multiple calls indicating a fire, but the information ranged from a rubbish fire in the rear to a fire on the roof.

As Ladder 12 approached the scene, smoke was visible, and a 4 inch supply line was laid from the hydrant next to Blockbuster Video. Lt. Robbie Ruch reported a pile of cardboard boxes on fire next to the building and assumed command.

Firefighters pulled an inch and 3/4 hose line to extinguish the fire, and a ladder was thrown to the roof to check for any fire extension. A piece of wooden soffit was found to be charred from the fire, but there was no further fire extension to the building. Other responding crews checked the interior of the mall for smoke or fire and found nothing. There were no injuries.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire.
