| At 1:47am this morning Sykesville and surrounding mutual aid crews were dispatched to a house fire in the 800 block of Cornwall Court. Crews quickly responded and were advised by Carroll County communication center that Maryland State Police on the scene with smoke in the house. Sykesville P-129 in the area returning from a previous call arrived and confirmed a 2 story wood frame single family structure with smoke showing. Upon arrival E124 crews forced entry into the house and found smoke through-out. Crews advanced a hand line to the second floor where they found fire at the top of the stairs. Upon their arrival, Tower 12 placed ground ladders to all sides of the house. A primary and secondary search was completed and it was found that the occupants of the house were out of town on vacation. Other crews arrived and assisted with a second hand line to the basement were fire was found and extinguished. All three floors of the structure had fire damage. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and began overhaul and salvage operations. At this time the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire which is believed to be a lighting strike from a storm that went through the area earlier in the evening. Howard County Engine 31 filled in at Sykesville for the duration of the incident and also responded to a fire alarm at Transitions Health Care Center. |
