| Another milestone has been reached in the recovery of the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department from last year's collapse and fire that destroyed nearly all of the fire station.
Volunteers and paid employees are rejoicing after the completion of Phase One of the construction of the new fire station; and have moved into their new living space, built to the rear of the engine bays.
This section of the station currently houses new bunk rooms, a locker room, and full shower and bathroom facilities. The space is also temporarily serving as a day room and kitchen until the rest of the new station is completed, sometime in early 2012. The temporary day room and kitchen will then be converted to additional bunk rooms.
Since the fire in February of last year, members have been living in temporary quarters, beginning with a large tent pitched on the site, to trailers erected on site. Morale is on the rise as members are now able to enjoy permanent luxuries that the trailers just could not provide.
The members of the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department would like to extend a thank you to the community for helping us through the hardships of the last year as we celebrate and enjoy our new living quarters. |
