Sykesville firefighters were dispatched at 8:30 am, Saturday, October 15, to the 4000 block of Salem Bottom Road for a reported basement fire.

Engine 123 and Squad 12 responded on the mutual aid call with full crews. Winfield Engine 143 arrived on the scene reporting smoke from the basement of a ranch-style home that had been converted to a duplex.

Engine 123's crew was ordered to assist Engine 143 with firefighting. Winfield's engine crew had placed a hose stream through the basement window to darken down the fire. Captain Dave Barnes and his crew forced entry into through the exterior basement door and searched for the seat of the fire. Squad 12's crew arrived and assisted with ventilation duties. Due to the quick work of Engine 123's crew, the fire was controlled within minutes, and contained to the basement.

The occupants of the duplex had working smoke alarms, which alerted them to the fire. They were able to escape their home safely, and there were no injuries to firefighters.

The investigation into the fire was conducted by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's office.
