Firefighters responded to the Eldersburg Plaza on Saturday, October 15, for a reported grease spill in the parking lot of the Eldersburg Plaza on Liberty Road.

Lieutenant Robbie Ruch and the crew of Ladder 12 arrived to find an area of fryer grease running from Masci's Ranch House restaurant downhill across the plaza parking lot. It was reported that an employee spilled the grease the night before, and then attempted to wash it down with a garden hose. That only made the grease spread farther across the parking lot.

Lieutenant Ruch, realizing that normal absorbent material would not address the issue, asked the dispatch center to contact the Maryland Department of the Environment. Even though some of the grease had entered the storm drain, MDE advised they would not respond to the incident.

Lt. Ruch then advised dispatch there was nothing the fire department could do to clean up the slippery mess, and asked dispatch to contact the Carroll County Health Department as a courtesy.
