Sykesville Firefighters Assist At Howard County Fire

(West Friendship) -- Firefighters from Sykesville assisted West Friendship crews at an attached garage fire Sunday morning, August 22.

The fire alarm was turned in at approximately 6:10 am. The owner of the house told fire officials that he had awakened and discovered smoke coming from the two car garage attached to his home. He was able to successfully awaken his wife and four children, and they exited the home safely.

When West Friendship Fire Chief Mickey Day arrived on the scene moments later, he reported fire in the garage. West Friendship Engine-Tanker 3-4 pulled to the rear of the house and its crew began a fire attack.

Sykesville Ladder 12 was the next unit to arrive and received orders to go to the roof and perform ventilation duties. Sykesville Squad 12 arrived shortly thereafter, with its crew assisting the ventilation and overhaul duties.

Chief Day requested a Task Force alarm and two additional tankers as there are no fire hydrants in the neighborhood. Additional units from Howard and Carroll Counties were dispatched to fill the assignment.

Fire crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire and prevent its spread to the main part of the home. The fire was controlled in approximately ten minutes.

There were no injuries, and the cause is under investigation. Two vehicles inside the garage were a total loss.
